Piazza Armerina

Piazza Armerina is a city located in the heart of Sicily that flourished certainly during Roman times.

Actually, the very reason why Piazza Ermerina is renowned is the presence of the magnificent Villa Romana del Casale, belonging not by chance to Roman period.

The villa is an ancient Roman residence of the middle IV century A.D. With its 60 rooms and 3500 square meters of floor mosaics, it is home to one of the best examples of Roman art in the world. These extraordinary polychrome  mosaics, celebrated among scholars of antiquity, depict scenes concerning numerous subjects, ranging from daily life to mythology. The most famous one is the tableau showing women exercising with barbells in their “bikinis”; a scene that could well describe a typical scenario of twentieth century.

Due to its extraordinary mosaics, the villa has been included in the list of Unesco World Heritage Sites.
