Day 4
Self Drive Palermo > Erice, Salt Way Road > Marsala Area
Breakfast at hotel.

Today self-drive to Erice,  a charming,  well preserved medieval Village with its narrow medieval. To discover Erice walk through the alley streets and the squares, bordered by churches and palaces that, in open spaces, reveal majestic landscapes. Among the most beautiful places, there is the Spanish neighborhood. It is said that this area was made during the Spanish ruling in order to accommodate Spanish soldiers, as it was mandatory for every city of Sicily. In Erice, a blockhouse was built, which we have fascinating remains, and a church dedicated to the cult of S. Antonio; however, the Spanish neighborhood was never finished because the soldiers were housed in the nearby castle. Erice’s symbol is the Venus Castle (Castello di Venere), built by the Normans who used materials from the temple of Venus in Erice, from which the castle takes its name. The castle was surrounded by towers and beside them there is the Balio, a wonderful garden from which you enjoy an extraordinary panorama. Exploring Erice narrow streets do not forget to stop in a local pastry shop. Let’s taste the famous sweets of Erice (pastry tasting Not included). We have a great choice among historical laboratories of sweets from Erice. There are sweets made from ancient recipes of the nuns of cloistered monasteries. Decorated like lace, the marzipan sweets are stuffed with preserved cedar. The genovesi ericine are filled with hot custard and sprinkled with icing sugar. Mustaccioli, classic or honey types of cookies, are flavored with a hint of clove. Finally, the marzipan fruits, almond based, with soft and natural colors, cannot miss in this list. (Pastry tasting Not included)

In the early afternoon self-drive to Marsala Area crossing the Salt Way Road, skirting the lagoon to see the snow-capped mountains but hills of salt, one of the Sicilian economy’s historical resources that was already very precious in the days of the Phoenicians, who were the first to bring some form of technology to its production. A significant date in Sicilian wine history is 1773, the year John Woodhouse began producing what was destined to become one of the island’s best loved products: Marsala. Today visit one of the most important Winery in Marsala with wine tastings. Later relax at the salt pans Saline Ettore Infersa (Admission fee: Not included, payable on the spot at the ticket office) which offer a truly unique landscape. Windmills, first introduced during mediaeval times, dot the horizon, a testament to how things were once done, though one or two continue to function, pumping water through the sluice gates into or out of the various basins. Piles of harvested salt, neatly covered with terracotta tiles, lie between the road and the basins waiting to be despatched. Overnight in Marsala. (BB S)

Located on the south west coast of Sicily, Selinunte (named Selinos by Greeks) was one of the richest and most important cities for Magna Grecia. Unfortunately, it was turned into ruins by a fierce attack of Carthaginans who massacred or took into slavery its inhabitants. Undoubtedly, its ruins rank among the most remarkable and fascinating archaeological sites in Sicily. The archeological site is the largest in Europe. If you are passionate about history and archeology, or just curious and eager to see world’s wonders, you will spend very suggestive time by visiting this coffer brimming with Mediterranean history. Furthermore, Selinunte benefits from a beautiful position: it overlooks the sea and it is surrounded by golden beaches.

Day 7
Self Drive: Agrigento > Valley of the Temples > Piazza Armerina > Ragusa
Breakfast at Hotel.

Today self drive to the finest of all ancient Greek sites: the Valley of the Temples (Admission fee Not included – Meet your Guide at the Ticket Office), one of Sicily’s most famous historical attractions. This area, included in the UNESCO Heritage Site list in 1997, is one of the most outstanding examples of Greater Greece art and architecture. Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading cities in the Mediterranean world. Its supremacy and pride are demonstrated by the remains of the magnificent Doric temples that dominate the ancient town, much of which still lies intact under today's fields and orchards. This splendid archaeological park consists of eight temples (and various other remains) built between about 510 BC and 430 BC. At the end of your guided visit self drive to Piazza Armerina situated deep in the Sicilian hinterland, at 721 metres above sea level, one of Sicily’s most frequented tourist spots. However, it is not the town that most people come to see, but the famous Villa Romana del Casale (Admission fees Not included). Built in the middle of the 4th Century AD as a hunting lodge by a Roman patrician the Villa is home to some of the best preserved and extensive examples of Roman mosaics spread over around 3500mt. The villa is one of the most luxurious of its kind. It is especially noteworthy for the richness and quality of the mosaics which decorate almost every room; they are the finest mosaics in situ anywhere in the Roman world. These extraordinarily vivid mosaics, probably produced by North African artisans, deal with numerous subjects, ranging from Homeric escapades and mythological scenes to portrayals of daily life, including the famous tableau of girls exercising in their “bikinis”. The visit inside the Roman Villa will be done independently, every room has information boards. Later self drive onto Ragusa, accommodation and overnight. (BB)

Day 8
Self Drive: Ragusa > Modica > Ragusa
Breakfast at hotel and independent visit of Ragusa one of the most fascinating towns in Sicily. Like the other towns in the Val di Noto, was badly damaged in the 1693 earthquake and largely rebuilt in Sicilian Baroque style. Public opinion on where to rebuild the town was divided, and so a compromise was made. The wealthier, more aristocratic citizens built a new town in a different site, now Ragusa “Superiore”, while the other half of the population decided to rebuild on the original site, on a ridge at the bottom of a gorge, now Ragusa Ibla. While the upper part has its fair share of architectural delights, it is the smaller Ragusa Ibla down below that really draws visitors.

Later self drive to Modica, another enchanting Baroque town.  Modica is custodian of a 400 year tradition of Sicilian chocolate-making. Being part of the Spanish kingdom for so many years meant that Sicily was often one of the first recipients of the new foodstuffs being brought back from South America. Cacao was one of these and today Modica still specialises in making granulous chocolate, often flavoured with chilli pepper, cinnamon or vanilla, that is based on Aztec methods and recipes. Chocolate shops abound and, for the real chocoholic, it is sometimes possible to watch the “chocolatiers” at work. Tasting of Modica chocolate is a must (chocolate tasting Not included).

Later self drive back to your accommodation. (BB)

  • Breakfast at hotel

  • Independent visit of Ragusa and Modica

Day 9
Self Drive: Ragusa > Syracuse > Ragusa
Breakfast at hotel.

Today self drive to Siracusa. Upon arrival meet your English speaking Guide at the Ticket Office of the Archaeological Park (Admission fee: not included) and start your guided visit of this amazing site highlights of which are the Greek Theatre, the Roman Amphitheatre and the Paradise Quarry. The resulting park contains some of the most extraordinary monuments that classical antiquity has left us and, given their degree of interest and importance, has few equals elsewhere in Italy. Then stroll through the streets of Ortygia Island, the heart of the city center, to visit the Dome (Admission fee: not included). This delightful pedestrian square is home to the wonderful Cathedral built on the site of an ancient Temple of Athena as can clearly be seen from the original Doric columns that were incorporated into the building’s main structure. Also on this square is the beautifully symmetrical Baroque Palazzo Beneventano and the church of Santa Lucia, the town’s patron saint. Later to the colourful daily Street Market, which sells a fantastic array of fruit, vegetables, fish and meat.

Day 10
Self Drive: Ragusa > Noto > Noto Winery Estate > Marzamemi > Giardini Naxos (Taormina Area)
Breakfast at hotel.

Today self-drive to Noto, famous as one of “capitals” of Baroque art in Italy. The city of Noto was rebuilt --totally rebult after the earthquake of 11 January 1693 -- approximately 15 kilometers away and owes its beauty to the fact that it was built using a consistent style. The architects who worked on its reconstruction throughout the 18th century thought of the city as if it were theatrical scenery full of unexpected views and in which no two corners were alike. Added to this was the ability of local sculptors who had learned to use the local stone, which is rather soft, to decorate the buildings with a sort of lacework made of stone.

Self drive then to an amazing Winery Estate in Noto Area to enjoy a wine tasting and lunch.

After lunch self drive to Marzamemi, an enchanting fishing village, not far from Noto; it features in its blue venues of its waters and the pure white of the, kissed by the sun, houses. It is Marzamemi, with its tunny fishing nets dated 1600, one of the most important in Sicily, with its docks for yachting boats, ruins of ancient vessels, narrow alleys, beaches impressed at sight, traditional cuisine which highlights the strong and original fishing tastes, and the wise processing of fishing products (red tuna bottarga), very often matched to the tomato of the nearby Pachino. Self drive to Giardini Naxos (Taormina Area), accommodation at hotel and overnight. (BB L)

  • Breakfast at hotel

Breakfast at hotel.

Today self drive to Taormina, the world famous resort town in Sicily. Taormina is a picturesque small town perched on a slope high above the Ionian Sea on the eastern coast of Sicily. Close to the site of one of the earliest colonies founded by the Ancient Greeks in Sicily, Taormina became a thriving Greek and then Roman town. The size and elegance of the town cathedral and many of its buildings are evidence of Taormina's moderate prosperity over the centuries. By the end of the 19th century this picturesque and ancient town was already on the tourist trail, with famous visitors including Oscar Wilde, Richard Wagner and Tsar Nicholas II. Enjoy an independent visit of the Greek-Roman Theater (Admission fees Not included), suspended between sea and sky, with Mt Etna looming on the southern horizon. Built in the 3rd century BC, it's the most dramatically situated Greek theatre in the world and the second largest in Sicily (after Syracuse). In summer, it's used to stage concerts and festival events. Then you continue to Corso Umberto a pedestrian, boutique-lined thoroughfare ideal for strolling and window-shopping. You start at the tourist office in Palazzo Corvaja, which dates back to the 10th century, before heading southwest for spectacular panoramic views from Piazza IX Aprile. Built on a promontory dominated by a sheer cliff, Cefalu', still keeping its ancient print, has grown around the Cathedral wanted by Ruggero II. The Cathedral, began in 1131, is one of the most interesting medieval monuments of the island and boasts outstanding mosaics and a wonderful cloister. Thanks to the splendid mosaic of Christ Pantocrator above the altar, it is twinned with the Palatine Chapel in Palermo and the Duomo in Monreale. Seeing all three on a trip to Sicily is strongly recommended. Also of interest is the Medieval wash house - lavatoio - which is fed by a natural spring and the Osterio Magno which, according to tradition was King Roger's very own residence. A large part of the town is pedestrian.
