A day cooking with the Duchess
The day starts with a meet and greet at your hotel and transfer to the Palace. Upon arrival meet the Duchess to start a journey deep into the colourful local Capo market to purchase ingredients for our class. Under the guidance of the the Duchess of Palma – Nicoletta Lanza Tomasi, we carefully select the freshest seasonal produce and learn about Sicily’s outdoor market tradition.
Part food tour, part cooking masterclass, Cooking with the Duchess delves deep into the way Palermitans have eaten for centuries, from the Arab traders that first set up Mercado del Capo 1,000 years ago to the Jewish, Normans and Greeks that made this city the street-food capital of Europe. It also ends at Nicoletta’s home, the cacti-lined 18th-century Palazzo Lanza Tomasi – a palace on the city’s seafront, where the Duke’s father, author Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, once sat to write the iconic novel, Il Gattopardo (The Leopard).
Back at the Palazzo, we will be taken to the organic gardens on the luscious terrace to pick fresh herbs, flowers and lemons that will enhance both the flavours and the uniqueness of your dishes. Then, in the welcoming kitchen, we will create a mouthwatering Sicilian menu under the Duchess’s expert guidance. Afterwards we will enjoy the fruits of your labour in the comfort of the Palazzo’s elegant dining room. White-gloved waiters will serve us the delicious Sicilian dishes we have created.
“I have always cooked traditional, Sicilian dishes to preserve the heritage of the island,” says Nicoletta Lanza Tomasi, Duchess.
To end the day in style we will be taken on a fascinating tour of this truly magnificent, lovingly restored Palazzo, where we will have the rare privilege of seeing the original handwritten manuscript of the Prince’s enduring masterpiece, The Leopard. the last residence of Prince Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, author of The Leopard, a masterpiece of Italian literature.
